5 Tips For Properly Maintaining Your Laminate Flooring

Posted on: 25 May 2021

While laminate floors may be designed to closely mimic the look of hardwood flooring, these two materials are quite different in the type of maintenance they require. Consequently, cleaning and caring for your laminate floors in the same manner as you would a hardwood floor can actually result in rather significant damage to your laminate. Furthermore, since laminate flooring cannot simply be sanded down and refinished to eliminate damage to its surface, any damage that is caused by improper maintenance can result in some rather hefty repair or replacement expenses. That is why it is so important for you to utilize the tips below when caring for your laminate flooring.

Tip #1: Use Minimal Moisture When Cleaning Laminate Floors

Moisture can become trapped under your laminate flooring and result in rather serious damage if water is allowed to get into the seams of the floor during the cleaning process. To avoid this problem, it is always best to apply cleaning agents directly to a microfiber mop and simply damp mop the floor. If you do choose to use a traditional mop to wash your laminate flooring, be sure to wring out the mop until it is just damp before using it.

Tip #2: Never Apply Wax To Laminate Floors

The use of wax on laminate floors is a big no-no, since these floors will not absorb the wax in the same way that hardwood flooring does. Consequently, the use of the products will result in a buildup forming on the floor's surface which can attract dirt and leave the floor looking and feeling less than ideal. If you have already made the mistake of using wax products on your floor, a mild solution of warm water and white vinegar can be used to remove the buildup from the floors surface.

Tip #3: Use Mild Cleaning Solutions

The milder, the better when it comes to the cleaning products you use to keep your laminate floors looking great. In fact, the best cleaning solution you can use is a simple mixture of clear dish liquid and warm water. Just be sure to use as little water as possible and ensure the floor is able to dry thoroughly even when using this mild solution in order to achieve the best results without damaging your floor.

Tip #4: Avoid Abrasive Cleaning Tools

Abrasive cleaning tools such as scouring pads and even stiff bristled brooms can scratch the surface of your laminate flooring. To prevent this type of damage, it is always best to stick to soft bristles or microfiber mops and brooms when cleaning your floor.

Tip #5: Make Use Of Door Mats In High Traffic Areas

Dirt that becomes stuck in the seams of your laminate flooring can be difficult to remove. The use of door mats in high traffic areas, such as doorways, can help to cut down on the amount of dirt that is tracked through your home. These door mats are also quite effective at allowing you to avoid tracking in small pieces of gravel and other debris that can potentially scratch the floor's surface.
